Will learning to use a laptop now lead to a promotion for me later?

Some teachers may feel that if they don’t receive accreditation or a qualification when they learn to use a laptop, then at least they should get promotion. No tool can ever guarantee you a promotion – your career path is in your own hands – but good tools may help you considerably.
Laptop usage could help you to become a better, more productive teacher; it could empower you to acquire skills that would not have been possible otherwise. These skills could qualify you to apply for promotion posts. In an indirect way learning to use a laptop may thus help you to get a promotion.
Many people have a view that they will only learn a new skill if it means that they would get more money. Such reasoning brings you nowhere. There is a Xhosa proverb that says:
Bakuba is far away, no person ever reached it.
To understand this proverb, you must know what Bakuba is. Even though there is a place in Central Africa known by this name, from the standpoint of a Xhosa speaker living on the Southern tip of Africa, Bakuba is not a real place, but an ideal country, a Utopia.
This adage is used as a warning against undue ambition, or as advice to be content with that which is within your reach. In English we would say:
It is no use building castles in the air.
Becoming a skilled laptop user may not result in a promotion right now, but it does open possibilities. Promotion may be like Bakuba to some teachers – something on a distant horizon – and perhaps you question the necessity to spend time and energy on a task that does not bring you immediate and direct benefits. But is this sound reasoning?
While a promotion post may be out of reach at present, learning to use your laptop is possible right now. Mastering this skill will make you a better and more productive teacher. It makes sense to focus on what you can achieve now and reap the results in the future.

And more often than not, when one presents a Course, which in all earnest equips the attendees to do their jobs much better, the question is often-”will i get a Certificate on completion of the Course to enhance my CV?”.
It calls for a paradigm shift in the way we think and do things. While a “huge increase” would definitely come in handy after a superlative accomplishment, acquiring the skill is a huge achievement in itself. Should a promotion follow then it is an added incentive,a side-show.
