Is laptop radiation harmful?

Monday, December 8th, 2008 | Computer Usage, laptops

You are exposed to increasing levels of radiation form a variety of sources: cordless phones, cell phones and their transmission towers, TV sets, satellites, computers, wireless internet, fax machines, copiers, domestic appliances and many more. The jury is still out on how harmful such radiation is to your health.

Does a laptop computer expose you to additional radiation?

Yes, it does: some radiation is emitted by the monitor, the hard disk, as well as the different electronic components.

Is this radiation harmful?

There is no clear evidence that it is, but there is also no clear evidence that it isn’t harmful.

There is, however, some good news about laptop radiation:

  • Laptops emit less radiation than a desktop computer
  • They emit even less radiation than cell phones
  • Radiation caused by wireless connections are more harmful than radiation caused by the inner workings of a laptop
  • You do not carry a laptop on your body throughout the day like a cell phone

Unless you are joined to the hip with your laptop, there should not be any undue concern about radiation. Some people advise that you should not put the laptop on your lap, since it brings it into direct contact with the body.

If you are concerned about the possible harmful effects of radiation caused by a laptop, follow the measures that are suggested to counteract any form of radiation:

  • Get up from time to time when you work with a laptop, stretch and take a walk around the room
  • Do not work for prolonged periods with the device
  • Eat enough vegetables and fruit
  • Drink sufficient water

If you still feel that a laptop poses too much of a risk to your health, and would therefore rather not use one, then also get rid of your TV set, microwave oven, cell phone, fax machine, and all other sources of radiation in the house and office.
