Why is writing on an interactive whiteboard better than writing on a conventional one?

Conventional boards – blackboards, greenboards and drywipe whiteboards – are made for writing.  It’s about all you can do on them.  Writing is only one of the many things you can do on an interactive whiteboard, but it is so much better than writing on a non-interactive surface.

A few of the advantages of writing on an interactive whiteboard are:

A wide variety of colours can be used.

You can pre-determine the width of the letters, according to your need – with chalk you are rather restricted.

Writing is erased with the greatest of ease.

On some interactive whiteboards you can even use your finger to do the writing!

Before you erase the writing you can store it for later use.

When you use the board in flipchart mode, you can write on any number of pages, and flip forwards and backwards – try that on a blackboard!

Most boards have software that can recognise handwriting and convert it into standard print type.  Once in this format, the text can be enlarged, moved around and changed into whatever colour or font you may wish.

You can do the writing at home on your personal computer and bring it to class – no more wasting lesson time laboriously copying notes on the board.

Think of it – with an interactive whiteboard you no longer have to contend with:

  • chalk dust
  • ghost writing left on blackboards and drywipe boards after you erased the writing on them
  • chills down your spine when learners grate their fingernails on the blackboard.

Writing is raised to a new level when it is done on an interactive whiteboard.

Writing on the IAWB may require a slightly different technique as some people have the tendency to put their wrist down when writing. Also some of us press harder on pens than others. Slight adjustments can be made to compensate. If people have handwriting like mine then it can be converted to various fonts, which is great. Spare learners some bad handwriting. Writing on the Smartsoftware at home is difficult and there typing your notes is advisable.
Creating Mindmaps with Mindmap software on the board instead of writing notes will be more effective in learning. But then you can easy add to them in real time by writing on it if necessary. Just a thought.

With the interactive board you can use a background template with lines in order to write in a straight line – something I could never master!
