Is an interactive whiteboard just a frippery?

Monday, September 7th, 2009 | IWBs

A frippery is defined as pretentious, showy finery; something trivial or non-essential.  It is different from a gadget, which has a particular function.  A frippery is an unnecessary add-on.

An example of a frippery is an extravagant decoration on a hat.  The hat does not need the decoration, but it does elevate it to being a piece of showy finery – it is a mere adornment, perhaps serving the dictates of fashion.

Is an interactive whiteboard such a frippery?  Is it simply an item to decorate a room? Or an attempt to keep up with the latest trends in technology?

In some classrooms an interactive whiteboard is nothing more than a frippery – it is just a piece of technology that gives the classroom a modern look

It is up to you to ensure that the board in your room is not a frippery.

You must understand what an interactive whiteboard can do for you.  Do you know all its functions?  Are you aware of all the different modes in which it can be used?  If you use it as a fancy surface to display your presentations your board becomes a frippery – a fashion accessory.  You can just as well use a wall painted white.

Talk to your colleagues about the ways in which they use their interactive whiteboards; don’t miss training sessions; spend time with the supplier of your board; attend seminars and presentations; and surf the internet to learn how teachers in other parts of the world use their devices.

Rather than a fashion statement your interactive whiteboard can be an essential part of your classroom experience.  It is very fashionable to install interactive whiteboards in classrooms – if you are fortunate enough to have one in your room, don’t let it be a frippery.

Having just recently had a white board installed in my class, I am amazed / fascinated with my new teaching resource. My only concern is that I need training so that I can use this resource to it’s optinum. The white board gives me so many more options in class and will definately enhance teaching and learning in my class.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I am a rather late convert to the power of Interactive electronic whiteboard. The potential of this tool is limited only to the limitations of the educator. And therein lies the rub. BUT WHAT IF… what if one could have interactive software/lessons that could be used even if the educator has a lack of will or apprehension towards IEWBoards?

Gavin = 10/10.

I want to quote Gavin : “. My only concern is that I need training so that I can use this resource to it’s optinum. The white board gives me so many more options in class and will definately enhance teaching and learning in my class.”

TRAINING is an ongoing process. Clinton enhances the notion of INTERACTIVE LESSONS. Maybe we should have a hyperink site on the Smartteach.com website to “upload” South African lessons.

Gavin, I have good news for you. The whole of the fourth term will be devoted to IWB training at your school.

What really impresses me at your school is that although the whiteboards have only been in for about a month, and the audio speakers only installed last week, every single educator has worked out how to use their IWB and everyone is already using their boards daily to run content-rich, interactive software. The truth is, you can do so much even BEFORE receiving training, if you already know how to use a computer. I am so encouraged when I see teachers at your school helping each other and giving each other tips on new functions they have discovered on their IWBs. With this kind of positive and collaborative attitude you are all going to achieve great things!

It’s true what your new school signboard says – you are a “Community School of Excellence!” Have fun with your IWB!

Gavin, how about a training conference for the five schools in our area? A time when we can focus exclusively on IWB training and the skills to deliver curriculum effectively. I hear you. Unless we give adequate training we may miss a great opportunity to revitalize teaching and learning.

At the recent SAHISA principals conference I sat watching one of the IWB vendors demonstrating the Smart Board to a principal from a school in KZN.
At the end of the presentation the principal (who also teaches IT at this rather prominent and respected school) said and I quote, ‘everything you have showed me I do with software, a PC and a DVP, why do I need the IAWB?’
The presenter was dumbstruck and did not know how to answer!
Is the R24,000 justifiable? Or can a good teacher do virtually as much with the software, PC and DVP – all of which are needed to run an IAWB anyway?

I need to set the record straight – my previous posting was not intended to discredit the brand Smart Board nor any of it’s vendors or proponents. I apologise to anyone who may feel offended.
The IAWB could have been any other brand, and the intention of the posting was to allow the proponents of IAWB’s an opportunity to point out the advantage of the IAWB over a PC, software and a DVP.
Afterall, the question raised by the blog is ‘Is an IAWB just a flippery?’
