What is a blog in Afrikaans?

Monday, August 31st, 2009 | Blogging

The Afrikaans word for blog is webjoernaal.  But most of us sommer say “blog”.

And for the benefit of English readers, the word sommer is one of those words losing its flavour in translation.  The dictionary gives alternatives such as: for no particular reason, without further ado – but both are a shade off.

Sommer ‘n gedig, found op ‘n blog:

IN DIE VLEI

Daar onder in die vlei
Zoem, zoem ’n by -
En skoenlappers bont
Die vlieg daar rond
Om sap uit die blomme te suig.

Die voëltjies is daar
In klompies bymekaar,
Hulle vlieg en sing,
Bou nessies in ’n kring
Van stokkies, grassies en strooi.

Twiet, twiet, twieretwiet!
Fluit ’n vink in die riet.
O, kom saam met my
Na die voëls in die vlei,
Want dis vrolik, so vrolik daar!

Jongspan, 15 March 1946

(This was the first ever published work of Andre P Brink)

… en sommer nog ‘n poem:

SOMMER NET VIR JOU

Ek mis jou so verskriklik baie,
jou happiness and smiles
altyd nice met my, die manier waarop ons chat ens.
Ons kan saam kuier en net na mekaar sit en kyk.
ons kan rondval maar nie naam weggooi nie.
Jy skinner nooit van my nie, praat nooit strooi agter my rug nie.
Jy sal my nooit verkleineer of my hart breek nie.
Jy sal my optel as ek val, my hare vashou as ek peuk,
my hart mend as hy gebreek is.
Jy is my krag vriendin
en ek mis my rots waarop my huisie staan! !

Thank you Kobus. I often go to the webpage of RSG if I look for Afrikaans terminology. I happened to hear this programme one day when returning home from school and it was already after six. I was channel hoping just to pass the time and stumbled on this programme, I found it very interesting and helpful. Carike, you will note that the poem was posted by someone who commented on my blog. I have no control over comments. However, I must point out to you that the person who quoted the poem, appropriately credited authorship to you. I trust you do not object to such exposure, particularly since your poem was quoted in the same breath as one by Andre P Brink. And I must say, I enjoyed the easy, comfortable style of your poem!

Thank you for clearing that up Kobus and for the compliment. I have a few more Afrikaans poems if you would like to go read them. The website is http://www.poemhunter.com
